Purpose Statement
The job of Lead Health Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing support district-wide in order to meet school health services needs and department goals; this includes tasks with specific responsibilities for training and monitoring school health assistants; monitoring and assisting with school health screenings; ensuring the compliance of laws and district policies relating to student health; providing appropriate assistance with care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; communicating and providing health information and serving as a resource to parents, teachers, staff, and administrators; assisting with clerical and administrative assistant duties to support the registered nurses and Director of Health Services.

This job reports to Director of Health Services

Essential Functions

  • Monitors and provides assistance to school health offices to ensure compliance with mandatory student health screenings.
  • Assists the registered nurses with ensuring that school health offices are in compliance with state and federal laws and district policies; Assists the registered nurses with the auditing of school health offices to ensure compliance with district and department procedures, policies and expectations.
  • Provides training, mentoring and assistance for new and current health assistants as directed by registered nurses or the Director of Health Services to ensure department is compliance with state, federal and district policies and regulations.
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions (e.g. absence reporting, work orders, kronos monitoring, maintaining personnel certifications and files, etc....) in order to ensure department compliance.
  • Monitors and ensures that student immunization district information is meeting state and district expectations; assists school health offices in ensuring compliance with regulations and reporting mandates.
  • Monitors and ensures that school health offices are in compliance department tasks and deadlines (e.g. pink sheets, immunizations, hearing/vision screening, etc....) • Assists with developing communication for district stakeholders as directed by the registered nurses and the Director of Health Services to ensure that communication goals and efforts are reached.
  • Responsible to cover school health offices as needed or when assigned by the Director of Health Services; performs functions of a health assistant when needed.
  • Participates and may assist in coordinating a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, trainings and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; and/or improving skills and knowledge.
  • Monitors and manages the inventory of the health services department to ensure resources are provided to the school health offices district-wide.
  • Provides educational material and distributes information on a variety of health subjects (e.g. lice, ringworm, drug prevention, personal hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of providing district-wide communication to teachers, students and/or parents.
  • Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legal requirements.
  • Provides assistance to school health offices in administering first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Provides assistance to school health offices in administering mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing, and height weight screenings, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Works with the Registered Nurses and Director of Health Services to report situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, advising administrator, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
  • Assists school health offices in implementing health care plans for students with health problems for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.
  • Assists school health offices in maintaining student's confidential files and health records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, prescription dispensing log, health history forms, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by regulatory requirements and professional standards.
  • Assists school health offices by following students health care plans with chronic illnesses for the purpose of assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
  • Prepares documentation for department (e.g. student health history, current health status, ASIIS immunization reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, conveying information, and/or complying with mandated requirements and professional guidelines.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, allergic reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.
Other Functions
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; and operating medical equipment utilized in school environment.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, write paragraphs clearly and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: providing health services in a school setting; state laws regarding sexually transmitted diseases; health standards and hazards; and stages of child development.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; adhering to safety practices; and being attentive to detail.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience Job related experience is required. LPN/EMT and/or 2 or more years of relevant experience preferred.

Education High school diploma or equivalent.
